There will be a library proposition on the ballot on May 21 at Greenwich Central School. New York State Education Law (under which libraries operate) provides that propositions requesting money for local libraries may be placed on the local school ballot. Such money is not in the school budget and has no impact on that budget. The Easton Library has not requested an increase in funding since 2008. Easton Library is relying on the support of the voters of the district to help secure sustainable funding at a time when library services are in greater demand and are more diversified.

Easton Library is requesting an increase in funding to the amount of $40,000. This level of library support will make possible increased access to high speed internet service for the Easton community, including additional library hours, staff support, and equipment. In this digital age, it is essential that Easton residents have a library that provides this service to all.

In the fall of 2009 writer and historian, Teri Gay launched her book Strength Without Compromise: Womanly Influence and Political Identity in Turn-of-the-Twentieth Century Rural Upstate New York. The Political Equality Club of Easton is highlighted and the work of its two most ardent leaders, Lucy Allen and Chloe Sisson, showcases the Easton club members commitment to “votes for women.”

New York Archives magazine, in its Fall 2011 issue, also features the women of the Easton P.E.C. and the unique approch taken by those rural women in seeking to gain the vote. Stop by the library to borrow this magazine and read The Suffragists of Easton also written by Teri Gay.
